Tree & Large Shrub Planting

1. Find a place where your plant will receive the correct amount of sunlight and have plenty of room to grow over time.

2. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball. When the tree is set in the hole, the root flare should be even with ground level.

3. Remove tree from container or remove top half of burlap from the root ball and fold metal basket loops down. Remove any protective coverings on the tree.

4. Adjust tree as needed to make sure the trunk is straight. Add soil as needed under root ball to make adjustments. Depending on the quality of the material you are planting in, it might be necessary to use a soil amendment. Fill the hole 1/3 of the way, packing in the sides as you go. Continue adding soil until the hole is filled level to the ground and the sides are free of air pockets. Create a bowl a little bit wider than the root ball to retain water.

5. Add mulch to the base of the tree to help with moisture retention. Be sure not to allow mulch to build up on the root flare as that will cause it to rot. Continue to water throughout the growing season and enjoy!

Shrub & Perennial Planting

1. Find a place where your plant will receive the correct amount of sunlight and have plenty of room to grow over time.

2. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball. When the plant is set in the hole, the top of the root ball should be no more than 1″ above ground level to allow for mulch.

3. Remove the plant from the container and scarify the roots. The goal is to enable roots to grow freely. If root ball is loose, be careful not to let it lose its structure.

4. Make sure plant is straight. Depending on the quality of the material you are planting in, it might be necessary to use a soil amendment. Add soil around the sides of the root ball, making sure to pack the dirt in as you go. Add soil until the hole is filled level to the ground. Be sure no foliage or branches are buried in dirt.

5. Add mulch around the base of the plant. Be sure not to build the mulch up around the plant as that will cause it to rot. Continue to water throughout the growing season and enjoy!

WATERING

The most important part…

Just how much water is enough?

Ground Cover & Small Plants: 1-2 gal/plant
Medium Plants (2-3′ tall): 2-3 gal/plant
Large Shrubs (3-5′ tall): 3-5 gal/plant
XL Shrubs & Small Trees (5-8′ tall): 5-8 gal/plant
Medium Trees (8-12′ tall): 8-12 gal/ plant
Large Trees (12’+): 12-15 gal/plant

NEW PLANT WATERING SCHEDULE
First 2 Weeks: Daily
Weeks 3-4: Every Other Day
Rest of the Growing Season: Every 3-4 Days
*If temperatures exceed 90 degrees, you will want to water
daily. Plants should be moist, not drenched… don’t be afraid to
skip watering if plants are too wet! Early morning or early
evening are the best times to water. Continue to check that
plants are adequately watered even after it rains.

A SLOW POUR IS A GOOD POUR! AVOID TRENCHING OUT THE TOP OF THE ROOT BALL!
